Commercial Cattle

We use an Angus and Simmental based cow, bred Simmental to achieve a full pen of replacement quality heifers, which sell immediately after the bulls at our annual sale. We also use Simmental/Angus cows bred Charolais to produce quality tan replacements.

3rd Generation

After graduating in Agricultural Production with a major in livestock from Olds College, Kresten returned to the family farm to work alongside his parents, Lloyd and Sandra. He married Ashley in 2012, and shortly afterwards moved into his grandparents (Burt and Shirley) house.

4th Generation

Just hours before our first bull sale on April 4, 2013, we proudly welcomed the 4th generation of Jorgenson's on our farm! Kresten and Ashley had a baby girl, Sydney Matilda.

iNTRODUCTION OF PUREBRED CATTLE

Simmental

It was a proud moment by all, when in 1996, Burt & Shirley, and Lloyd & Sandra, purchased their first cattle to be bred purebred. Over the years we have become primarily a red, polled based herd, however the past 10 years has seen us working hard to increase the blacks in our herd. We base our success on solid, heavy working, good walking herd sires. Our purebred herd gets no special treatment over our commercial herd. This way we are confident that the replacements we produce will work on your ranch operation.

CAMDEN FARMS LTD.

Camden Farms/Camden Cattle Co. History
Written by Lloyd Jorgenson

My parents Burt and Shirley moved to the farms current land location in 1950. Dad grew up 4 miles west and mom about the same distance to the east. After a few years of teaching in the late 40s, dad made the decision to farm full time and purchased a small farm four miles south of New Brigden where they raised a family of six and lived for the next fifty-three years.

We always had a commercial herd of cattle and my interest and love for them started at a very early age. I was always involved with the cows and a member of the local 4-H club. In 1974, after taking an artificial insemination course, our experimenting in the exotic breeds began. It did not take long for us to be convinced that Simmental was the breed of choice.

Fast forward twenty two years…Sandra and I have a family of four, are involved in a 500 sow farrow-to-finish hog breeding stock company and have a commercial herd of about 300 cows. In 1996 we purchased our first purebred Simmental genetics. The next many years we would build and improve our purebred herd by sourcing many females and walking herd bulls from some of the top herds in Western Canada with the help of Robert Wilson, Maxwells, Skors, D Bar C, Sunstar, Erixon, EDN and Sunny Valley to name a few. Most recently McMillen Ranching and Westway Farms herd sires have been purchased.

In 2009 our last pigs were sold and with that came a lot more time to focus on our cattle and in particular our purebred herd. Our son Kresten and his wife Ashley became involved in the cattle operation full-time in 2012 after their marriage in May of that year. Since then our purebred herd has grown to about 140 head and we have added a small Red Angus division. Our commercial herd of mainly Red Angus/Simmental cows numbers approximately 170 head.

After selling bulls off our farm from 2000-2012 we thought it was the right time to start a bull sale. Our inaugural sale was in April of 2013 at Dryland Cattle Trading Corp. in Veteran.

The herd bulls we purchase and use in our A-I program are selected for a combination of maternal and performance traits. Our cow herd is culled very hard on feet, udder soundness and temperament. As a result, our bulls on offer for sale should work in a variety of ranches and be sound, functional bulls that last.
